Technology in the classroom
Class Dojo is a website that allows me to take attendance, reward students being on task (among other reasons), encourage misbehaving students to follow the rules, stay in contact with parents, and collaborate with other teachers.
The application has an infinitesimal amount of quirks that allow for a dynamic classroom. It is simple and has customizable settings, encouraging users to stay in contact with each other. Here is the link for students to get started. Here is a link for parents to get started. |
Hands on activities
"Coin Flip Probability" provides the opportunity to debunk common misconceptions of probability. One of the best methods to conceptualize a topic is to allow time for experimentation and hypotheses, as well as allow for a discovery phase before getting into theory. Here, I discuss what the probability of getting 5 heads when flipping a coin 10 times will be. Most people will be surprised by the answer.
